International buyers do not always have time to travel for every candidate. A remote purchase can be organised more carefully when each decision is documented and independent checks replace assumptions.
Ask for recent full-length videos showing the horse being caught or handled where possible, tacked up, ridden in relevant work and standing after exercise. Short promotional clips can help create a first impression, but the buying decision should rely on broader evidence.
A live call can reduce the risk of relying only on edited footage. Ask to see the horse in real time, confirm the date, and request simple work relevant to your intended use. The purpose is not to stage a performance but to understand the horse’s normal behaviour.
Confirm that the horse shown in the videos and veterinary examination is the same horse identified in the sale documents. For registered PRE purchases, use the official Stud Book information where registration is material to the transaction.
The veterinarian should report to the buyer. Explain that the purchase is remote and agree how the examination, findings, radiographs or other diagnostics will be delivered. A direct conversation with the veterinarian is especially valuable when the buyer cannot inspect the horse personally.
Remote purchases benefit from precise written terms: horse identity, price, payment schedule, what documents are included, any agreed conditions, and who is responsible for transport arrangements. Do not rely on informal messages for the core commercial agreement.
Rules differ by destination and can change. Obtain a current professional transport quote and confirm animal-health, certification, customs and route requirements with the relevant professionals and authorities. Within the EU, official animal-health systems apply to equine movements; non-EU destinations may add further import requirements.
Agree who will update the buyer at collection, during transport and on arrival. Keep copies of the transporter’s details and travel documents supplied for the horse. At the destination, allow the horse time to settle into a new environment before judging the transition.

A remote purchase can be managed more carefully with extensive current video, live viewing, document checks, independent veterinary examination and clear written terms, but every horse purchase still carries risk.
The buyer should be comfortable that the veterinarian is independent and reports directly to the buyer.
