If registered PRE status matters to your purchase, documents are not a formality. They are how the horse’s official identity and registration are established.
ANCCE states that a Purebred Spanish Horse is considered PRE when it is registered in the official PRE Stud Book. The Stud Book is officially recognised by Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture and is the reference buyers should use when registered PRE status is part of the sale.
Ask to see the Equine Identification Document or official passport supplied for the horse and make sure the identity details correspond with the animal being offered. The PRE Stud Book issues Equine Identification Documents for registered PRE horses. Do not rely solely on appearance, colour or marketing terminology.
“Spanish”, “Andalusian” and “PRE” are sometimes used loosely in advertising. A horse can be a very good Spanish or Iberian riding horse without being registered PRE. If PRE registration matters, ask directly and verify the official record.
After purchase, the buyer should understand what is required to update ownership in the relevant records. The PRE Stud Book publishes procedures for ownership changes.
